P004 — The City Customs
2024London’s vibrant tapestry weaves together countless unique threads, from its storied past to its cutting edge fashion and cherished customs. Our school trip to this pulsating metropolis challenged us to peel back the tourist veneer and capture the city’s true essence through creative visualisations. Eschewing the well worn clichés of Big Ben, Beefeaters, and the London Eye, I set my sights on the quirky nuances that define everyday London life. My chosen trio of distinctly British peculiarities emerged: the counterintuitive ‘keep left’ rule for traffic, yet ‘keep right’ on escalators; the sneaky service charges lurking in menu fine print; and the surprisingly early ‘last orders’ at pubs – 11 pm weekdays and midnight weekends – ensuring Londoners maintain a semblance of sensible bedtimes.
These observations birthed a set of postcards, each a window into London’s idiosyncrasies. As a finishing touch, I crafted a thank-you card featuring an abstract heart ingeniously incorporating the iconic Union Jack. This collection offers a fresh perspective on the city, inviting viewers to see London through a local’s eyes.
