Rewire Festival pulses through The Hague’s historic heart each year, transforming venerable venues like the Royal Concert Hall and Central Church into pulsating hubs of avant-garde sound. This audacious gathering melds musical genres and artistic disciplines, offering a kaleidoscopic array of performances, bespoke commissions, pulsating club nights, thought-provoking installations, and cerebral talks. Tasked with crafting a bespoke typeface for this sonic odyssey, our team’s passion for electronic music made Rewire an irresistible choice. The festival’s ethos of genre-blending – from electronic to classical and everything between – became our typographic north star. Initial inspirations drew from retro pixel fonts, gradually evolving to incorporate grotesque elements and distinctive serif-like flourishes. The result? A typeface as experimental as Rewire itself, visually embodying the festival’s symbiotic fusion through the melding of square shapes. To showcase our creation in action, we designed an evocative type specimen. This foldable display not only presents every character but also elaborates on our overarching aesthetic vision. Echoing the font’s square-shaped elements, we incorporated these forms as dynamic background features throughout the specimen. A bold, contrasting colour palette of deep blacks and electric yellows further captures the typeface’s experimental essence.
For the project’s individual component, we each designed a poster and flag showcasing our collective creation. My personal vision tapped into Rewire’s psychedelic aura – that intoxicating alchemy born from cutting edge sounds reverberating through sacred halls. The festival’s visual aura, awash in riotous colour and dazzling light shows, became my muse. Distilling these elements, I embraced the classic psychedelic motif of melting forms, infusing it with a kaleidoscopic palette. While this concept takes centre stage on the flag design, I opted for an unconventional twist with the poster. Here, I emulated the flag’s vibrant colour spectrum using mirror-like paper. This iridescent surface captures and refracts light, mimicking the flag’s hues in an ever-shifting display. The result is a dynamic poster that transforms with its environment, echoing the festival’s ethos of constant reinvention. This material choice not only realised the concept in an unexpected way but also fostered a captivating interplay between the two designs. The resulting works capture Rewire’s essence: a mind-bending collision of history and innovation, where boundaries blur and sonic exploration reigns supreme.
